Incorporating a Theme: Washington, D.C. Fall Engagement with Sianna & Kali

A spooky, skater-girl session!

Let me start off by saying, I LOVE a theme. It makes every shoot just a little better if we can incorporate your true personalities! So when Sianna & Kalli suggested skating, AND ghosts, AND Washington, D.C Fall for their engagement!! Well I had to make it happen, obviously.

And there session really had me thinking about how I can help my other clients have just as much fun with their engagement photos. So I’ve gathered my best tips for incorporating a theme into your engagement pics.

First Things First: Outfits

An outfit can make or break a photo session. Obviously, no pressure. Seriously though, it doesn’t take a fashion consultant to style this shoot (although that wouldn’t hurt).

Think about what kind of clothes make you feel confident and comfortable. If that calls for a shopping trip, take it! Where will these outfits look best? Weather wise? Lean more into picking an outfit here.

Also, don’t be afraid to bring some props or additional outfits and accessories to make a regular photoshoot look like many. We love a diverse gallery.

What’s The Vibe?

Consider a few words that would describe your relationship. For example: adventurous, stylish, romantic, laid back, epic, funny, grungy, athletic, artistic, elegant. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, this will be a great starting point to help you decide where and how you want to take your photoshoot.

If you both love hiking, let’s do that! If you’d rather a picnic in the park with a good book, let’s make it happen! Dressed to serve all the editorial, moody looks? Love it!

A theme can also be as simple as wanting to recreate a photo from high school or your favorite TV show.

Gather Some Inspo

If you’re a visual person, like me, then it’s time to scour the internet for some valuable inspiration. Sometimes it takes just one photo to spark a unique idea. So don’t be afraid to take a look around and get excited! You can always take an idea and make it uniquely your own.
