Tips For The Ultimate Grad Session That Will Make All Your Friends Jealous

Go from basic to slayyy!

It’s that time again! Caps and gowns and champagne bottles are back in season! But this year, we’re going to make sure every session is dope af, embodies your personality, and breaks the timeline.

So here are some tips to take your session from basic to jaw-dropping from your go-to Denver photographer:

Start With An Overall Aesthetic

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again! The outfit can make or break a photo session. But what more do you want to consider other than the colors and style of your outfit?

We want to think about what the overall message sends! Graduating with an MBA, put on your best business suit and let’s get fancy somewhere downtown. Want to look delicate, artistic, and one with nature? Wear a flowy dress and sun hat in a field in the mountains.

You want your pictures to tell a story. Not just “do the job.”

Add Props That Actually Add Value

It might be tempting to bring something that appears in all the Pinterest photos like signs or graphic tee’s that make it super obvious this is a grad shoot!! But I promise, we can do that without all the cheese.

Aside from the obvious (cap, gown, and tassle), bring items that we can incorporate seamlessly, like accessories that such as hats, sunglasses, earrings, shoes. Bring an outfit that’s in your school colors, not just a shirt that says the same. If you’re an artist, athlete or musician, bring your tools and let’s capture your vibe naturally.

Choose A Cool Location

Now that you’re ready to stunt for the most epic photoshoot, it’s time to finalize your location. Most grads automatically default to shooting on their school campus. Which can be a great option if it offers variety!

However, if you want to go all out, consider choosing a location or two that matter more or showcase your personality and story better! Find some great Colorado photo location suggestions, here.

Get Some Inspo And Have Fun With It!

Once you’re done with all the pre-planning, keep scrolling Pinterest and gather some posing inspiration. This way you know what to expect when you show up to your shoot! I’m happy to guide you (and will) but you definitely won’t regret a couple minutes in front of the mirror to see what feels good!

In the end, just have fun with it! Trust your photographer and put on your best smile/smize. This only happens every so often, so enjoy it and it will come through in the photos. Celebrate good times and come out with the coolest grad shoot of 2022!

I’d love to schedule a few more incredible people for a graduation session through May! Contact your local Denver LGBTQ+ photographer for your next portrait shoot, here.
